Do The Right Thing

The banners are up, security suddenly tightened, posters and articles trading accusations filled the walls of faculties. All these can only mean one thing...the campus election is around the corner.

Once again, the fight is on between the pro-aspirasi and pro-mahasiswa factions.

Although, student bodies are prohibited from being affiliated with any political parties, it's little secret that one faction is pro-establishment (pro-aspirasi) while the other is anti-establishment (pro-mahasiswa)

Student politics are a reflection of national politics, no matter how the authorities try to conceal it.

Perhaps mirroring the political situation outside of campus, the odds are heavily stacked against the opposition in the campus polls as well. The authorities are known to throw their backing behind pro-aspirasi candidates to ensure their victory.

During my 1st year, all Chinese students were made to attend a gathering to listen to some talk by the representatives of the Chinese student committee. We were told specifically not to vote for the pro-mahasiswa or 'green faction'

This is what happen when you let them win

If they came to power, the Chinese students will suffer. There will be strict enforcements on our attire & entertainment will be forbidden (except nasyid performances). Our campus will be turned into a Taliban approved learning centre!

Those possibilities alone are enough to make us gullible 1st year students make the 'right choices'.

Random picture, nothing to do with this post whatsoever

And for those of us who live in residential colleges, rumours that we will be kick out of college if we voted for the 'wrong' candidates will be passed around every year.

College authorities made it clear that they support the pro-aspirasi candidates. More intimidating is the fact that the ballot paper is marked with a serial number traceable to our names.

Doesn't matter whether those rumours are true or false, the majority wouldn't want to take the risk.

Nobody really cares about student politics anyway. Student activism is severely curtailed in Malaysia unlike their counterparts in other countries, where they are influential in initiating political, social & economic changes.

Student activism means standing in from of a tank to make a point

But here, the candidates are reduced to fighting over petty issues like prices of food in cafetaria and the bus schedule.

I hope I do not get into trouble for my rantings. Did I not mentioned that threats and intimidations aside, the campus elections are 100% clean & fair. And I promise that when election comes, I will do the 'right thing'

Trapped Inside a Disco

Bush wants you to shut up

The Americans apparently had been employing a new method of torturing detainees being held in Guantanamo & Iraq....by using music.

Extremely loud music played directly into the ears of detainees, designed to induce sleep deprivation, prolong capture shock & disorient detainees during interrogations.

I think this is one of the cruelest form of torture, right there alongside water boarding.

We all knew how music can totally mess up people's minds. After all, we too had our own Guantanamo moments before.

Those orange jumpsuits are as bad as the music

Like the neighbour who insist on sharing his love for heavy metal music with you. Or radio stations that keep on playing the same songs repeatedly throughout the day.

Just how many times can you listen to Soulja Boy in a day before you start contemplating suicide?

The prisoners were subjected to higher degrees of brutality of course. One detainee describes being left in a pitch black booth for up to twelve hours with the heavy metal music blaring.

Imagined the royalties they would have earned

Unsurprisingly, heavy metal and rap are most often featured on the torture playlist. Some of the most common being Metallica's Enter Sandman, Drowning Pool's Bodies, AC/DC's Shoot To Thrill & Eminem's White America.

I think the prisoners will go equally crazy if being forced to listen to Mandopop love songs by Fahrenheit, Twins or F4.

The guards do have a sick sense of humour, like choosing the song Staying Alive for torture when the victim is certainly wishing for otherwise. Blasting prisoners with Britney Spears's music, so that they too suffered like the rest of the world.

Some of the choices are bizarre like the Sesame Street theme song & Barney's I Love You, You Love Me song. I agree with the Barney song though, it traumatises my childhood before.

Let me entertain you with a song, my only song

The irony here is that, America being a country that always positioned itself as the defender of human rights are violating them so blatantly. Nobody should be subjected to such sadistic form of torture....

Nobody, not even that irritating neighbour of mine.

Stop The Arrest!

Image from jelas.info

This is really too much!

1st, they detained Raja Petra under ISA for supposedly insulting Islam. Raja Petra saw it coming & even mentioned it in one of his post. True enough, after they lifted the ban on Malaysia Today, they promptly arrest him the very next day!

And later on, they arrested the lady reporter who reported about Ahmad Ismail's RACIST remark in Permatang Pauh. The Sin Chew journalist Tan Hoon Cheng was also arrested ISA. She was arrested for merely reporting the truth!

The racist son of a bitch only got a 3 year suspension for his remarks. The reporter got arrested under ISA. I am no supporter of ISA but this is a clear case of DOUBLE STANDARDS!

And as I type, Teresa Kok has also been detained under ISA.

I am seething with anger now!

Nobody deserves to be held without trial. Nobody deserves to be detained without a chance to defend themselves! It is inhumane to do so.

To those who authorise the arrests, all I can say is....Fuck You!

The Unsung Heroes of Merdeka

Another year, another Merdeka albeit a quiter one this year. For many, 31st August means countdown concerts, expensive fireworks & a massive morning parade to celebrate Malaysia's independence.

The problem is, they get the date wrong every year! Malaysia was established on the 16th of September 1963, that's the date of our 'real' independence!

31st August 1957 was just the independence of Malaya, Sabah & Sarawak only gained their independence on the formation of Malaysia 6 years later.

You can understand why their so pissed now when the government insisted on holding the celebration on the wrong date.

The formation of Malaysia was a merger of Malaya + Singapore + Sabah + Sarawak. They are suppose to have the equal status as the whole of Malaya (Peninsula Malaysia) but look at them now...downgraded to becoming 2 of the 13 states making up the country.

The celebration of Merdeka are heavily politicised and littered with inaccuracies...

We were made to believe that one party, Umno was responsible for the nation's independence & for that we must be forever grateful. By negotiating with the British, they secured independence without shedding a drop of blood.

Without shedding a drop of blood?

What about the communists who fought against the Japanese then the British? We might not subscribe to their ideology, but their fight against colonialism must be recognised.

What about the struggle of the other Malay party, PKMM? They were the exact polar opposite to Umno - very anti-British & left leaning, described in our history books as 'radicals'. In fact they were the 1st party to adopt the battle cries of 'Merdeka!'.

Their members were caught & jailed by the British who saw them as a threat, preferring to chat with their pro-British counterparts - Umno.

And the contribution by the coalition of AMCJA-PUTERA? The name certainly sounds familiar.

The contributions of all the different factions using different means to fight against the British were simplified, reduced to a few sentences in the textbooks. So, we only learn that our independence was presented to us on a silver platter.

How untrue...it's time we recognised the unsung heroes of Merdeka.

If you have the time, this documentary, 10 Tahun Sebelum Merdeka should be an interesting watch ;)

Conspiracy?

A report against Anwar has been filed by his aide alleging him of sodomy. Read the news here. I find this piece of news very disturbing. Because this is not the first time he has been accused of it, they used the same tactic 10 years ago to sacked him & throw him into jail.

He was of course cleared of the charge in 2004. Pronounced an innocent man. But in light of the new report made against him, police are expected to make an arrest soon.

I certainly hope not or a second wave of Reformasi will be triggered. This time the rakyat will not be as forgiving...

After all this is the man who led Pakatan Rakyat to victory in 5 states. The man who said he had enough MPs to form a new government. And also the same man some quarters proclaimed to be the PM in waiting.

So is this a ploy to destroy his credibility? Another
political conspiracy to silence him just like 10 years ago?

Thanks For The Hike

Firstly, I would like to thank Pak Lah & the BN government for the news that with immediate effect the prices of petrol will increase to RM2.70. SYABAS!!

With one smart move, we solve so many problems.

Finally, we can solve the traffic jams in the city because people will be using our very efficient public transport to commute now. It's always the poor people with their Kancils & Savvys that are clogging our roads. So now by hiking the price of fuel those peasants won't be able to afford to drive them anymore hahaha

There has been a lot of cases of people getting rob by Mat Rempits at petrol station too you know. By raising the fuel price, the government is actually making the petrol station a safer & more secure place. Nobody can afford to even pump petrol nowadays hahaha So take that you stupid Mat Rempits! I bet you never saw that coming, don't you?!

Huh? What do you mean crime rate is going to rise instead because people are finding it hard to make ends meet? That's not true! I dunno, I haven't seen the report on this.

The government also keep telling us that the subsidy is burdensome for a very long time, so it's time we remove it. Oil prices are rising worldwide you know. Like today I read in the newspaper that India is raising their fuel prices too. We need to follow suit cause it is a worldwide phenomena. Never mind the fact that India imports 70% of their fuel while we are a net exporter of oil lah.

Who cares if Petronas is enjoying record high profits due to the rising price of oil per barrel. Our petrol price is still the CHEAPER than Thailand & Singapore.

Oh, just don't look at the table below...

Although we are an oil exporter & we get crazy profits, why should we use those money to subsidize fuel to help the rakyat? Isn't it wiser to invest those billions for the future, for our anak cucu like what our 2nd Finance Minister told us here.

We are talking about billions here okay. With the available funds, we can finally send another heroic Malaysian up into space to continue our ground breaking research at the ISS - how to tarik teh in zero gravity. Or we can use it to buy more submarines, more Sukhois.

We are sacrificing for our future generations here, how noble.

Also, those Singaporeans & Thais are sucking us dry. They came here & pump their cars full of our subsidized petrol. Since we can't think of an effective way to stop it, we might as well raise the fuel price to almost the same as in their country haha Serve them right! Now pump lah pump lah! You won't get to enjoy OUR subsidies anymore ROTLMAO

TAHNIAH again! *clap clap clap*

Of Propaganda & Buletin Utama

I knew I should have switch off the television after watching the 7pm TVB drama. Instead I went on & watch Buletin Utama on TV3. It's 8pm, it's supposed to be the news but I am not sure I am watching news anymore.

Firstly, they did some reporting of the Bandar Mahkota Cheras (BMC) issue, about residents destroying the barricade. But there isn't any mentioned of the the incident of police beating up an innocent youth who was merely driving through that area. It is as if nothing happen! If not for Malaysiakini, nobody would knew about the incident.

That's police brutality & blatant abuse of power by the authorities!
Aren't such an incident news worthy enough? I felt disgusted. Why are they trying to cover up the incident? So that the police can just beat up any innocent victim & get away with it?

And then they report about the Selangor government free water plan. OK can you tell me is there anything wrong with providing 20 cubic meters of free water every month to the residents of Selangor to help with the increasing cost of living? Because I can't think of any.

Instead of giving them credit, they tried to criticize the plan by getting the views of so called 'experts'. One 'expert' yesterday said that there will be increased water wastage because of it. What utter rubbish! Are you saying that we should increased the water tariffs to curb wastage then? Stupid!

Why don't they go interview the poor people of Selangor who will benefit positively under the plan huh?

Those were not news, those were all PROPAGANDA!! It's so frustrating seeing how low they will go to discredit their opponents. That's why I am relying on blogs & online news portal for the real news.

May 13 : Why Should We Be Fearful?

Tomorrow marked the 39th anniversary of the fateful race riots that happened on May 13, 1969. If you are a Malaysian, then you will definitely be aware of the significance of this date. For until today, the mere mention of May 13 still manages to illicit fear.

We often hear it being use by politicians to threaten us from questioning certain policies. We were led to believe that if we did not keep a certain party in power, then the whole nation will descent into chaos just like what happened 39 years ago.

In fact, immediately after the political tsunami of the March 08 general election, supporters from the opposition parties, who won a lot of seats were told to refrain from holding victory rallies lest it is use as an opportunity to cause unrest. This was due to the ruling coalition being denied a 2/3 majority, which was one of the catalysts for the last riots.

My dad upon knowing the full impact of the results asked me to stay at home for the next few days fearing that riots will broke out. He had lived through the terrible events of the 1969 riots and many others like him too had such fears ingrained in them.

But people like me, who belong to a generation born after the incident may not share the same sentiment. We learned about May 13 in schools but what was written in our text books are just simplistic portrayal of the event. Although we still learned about May 13 in 'Hubungan Etnik' at university level, the subject remains a taboo. The complex incident was explained in just a few paragraphs & we gained no new insights into it.

Threats of another May 13 do not frighten the younger generation but instead had an opposite effect as seen from the recent general elections. Politicians who threaten to create instability if they lost power shouldn't have been voted into power in the first place.

A detailed account & understanding of the dark events of May 13 is needed or it will continue to lurk
beneath the harmonious race relations portrayed on the surface. It is time to bury the ghost of the past & move on. The incident should serve as a reminder of our fragility instead of being used as a political tool to instill a climate of fear.

Frankly, after 39 years why should we still be fearful?

P116 : The Aftermath

The election is all over now & for those who have the slightest awareness of local politics, the results is nothing less than shocking. For the past few days, we have been constantly bombarded with political news, analysis, comments, speculations bla bla bla........ I think many of us are already weary of this topic. In fact, this is my 3rd straight post about the election. Anyway, I think I need to post something on the results of election here in Wangsa Maju, as some sort of closure to the previous posts.

A picture paints a thousand words?

For the Wangsa Maju parliamentary seat, PKR's candidate Wee Choo Keong defeated incumbent Yew Teong Look by a razor thin majority of only 150 votes!! I am so glad I registered & managed to contribute towards his victory, even though I predicted Yew Teong Look will win. I am glad to be proven wrong this time. When you lost even though you promise to built a new Chinese school in the area, then you know that the people here are really really pissed.

Here is a detailed breakdown of votes according to polling stations taken from Wee's blog.

Sekolah Menengah Chung Hwa
- Won by 268 votes majority -

Sekolah Ugama Kg Sungai Mulia
- Won by 438 votes majority -

Danau Kota
- Won by 326 votes majority -

Taman Ibu Kota
- Won by 98 votes majority -

Sekolah Mun Yee
- Won by 177 votes majority -

Section 2
- Won by 609 votes majority -

TAR College
- Lost by 152 votes -

Wangsa Melawati
- Won by 111 votes majority -

Postal Votes
- Lost by 1065 votes -

I certainly hope that this will be the beginning of a new dawn. Expect the next 5 years to be more colorful & exciting, meaning more political news, analysis, comments, speculations bla bla bla........*headache already*

Slightly off topic, the new Perak MB has been announced last night, it's going to be the guy from PAS. Erm...forgot his name already. 3 names (1 from each party PKR, DAP & PAS:1 Chinese, 2 Malays) were submitted to the Sultan to be chosen. Before that, everybody agree to support the new MB regardless of whoever got chosen lar. Of course, in the constitution also got a rule saying only a Malay Muslim can become MB unless the Sultan gave his consent to do otherwise.

So, the Sultan chose this guy from PAS. Then guess what? Lim Kit Siang got very upset & said that DAP will boycott the swearing in. Huh? WTF?

Here we are, still celebrating the victory of the opposition, but suddenly this guy Lim Kit Siang had to destroy our new found sense of hope. Why can't they just work together? Come on lar, the Sultan thinks the people are not ready for a non-Malay to lead the state. Also, the last time I check, DAP is supposed to be a multi-racial party wor. So stop being disrespectful lor. If it's in the olden days, can get beheaded, you know?

Just accept the decision. I know DAP got the majority of seats. Don't let the new found power corrupts you. If this is what DAP is all about, I am sure alot of Malaysians will regret their decisions to vote for you *sigh*

Update : LKS had retract back his statement *clap clap clap*

P116 : Vote Vote Vote

Today is the culmination of 13 days of intense campaigning. Today is when Malaysia decides & I am happy to be part of it, for the very 1st time. In fact, I just came back from voting (feel so proud *sob*).

My mum woke me up at around 8am. From above, we can see a long line of people outside the Section 2 school gate, waiting to go in. So, I hurriedly prepare & head down to my former secondary school.

It was just a short walk from where I live to the polling station. Cars already lined both sides of the road leading up to the school. Many of them, decorated with BN's flags.

A small crowd had already gather at the road leading to the school's entrance. We stopped by BN's booth to check for our voting stream. The guy that do the checking for me look strangely familiar. Hmm..think I saw him in UKM before (I couldn't care less anyway as I was on a mission)

After punching my IC number into his laptop, I was issued this slip. Since this was done at BN's booth, the slip had a dacing on it.

As I make my way towards the polling station, I pass by a line of aunties doing some last minute vote fishing for MCA's incumbent Yew Teong Look. Of course by then, I had already decided on who to vote for. From the pics, you can see where the PKR's booth is situated as well. Not many people were checking their voting stream there though when compare to BN's booth. The guy manning the PKR's booth was another familiar face, it was the uncle who sell keropok lekor in front of Yee Fatt.

I continued my journey after taking a few more pics. It has been so long since I walk through those gates. Back in my secondary school days, I used to duty in front of the gate catching latecomers. But as I step into the school compound, I realize that the school has changed. It look very much nicer now in bright yellow paint compared to blue in my days. My dad used to say my school actually look more like a police station ; )

Once inside, I go to my designated voting stream number 8 which was situated on the 2nd floor. My parents all vote on the ground floor. I guess they divided us according to age as you do not expect the elderly to climb upstairs to vote. The queue was actually quite short.

The voting process is the same as our university's election. They checked your IC, cross out your name, give you a paper to vote & you dump it into the transparent box.

The whole thing took only a few minutes. But I have to wait for my parents as they were still in line after I was done. My dad took the longest time because the queue was crazy long at his stream. I guess not many young adults were coming out to vote hence my quick exit.

All 3 of us walk back home after that. As I pass by the PKR's booth, the keropok lekor uncle thank us for voting & upon seeing me holding a camera, invited me to take pictures of their booth. I gladly obliged for sure.

After all had been said & done, we can only wait for the result tonight. Hopefully, the candidate that I voted for will win (I am not telling you who though hehe). And more importantly, a new dawn for Malaysia will emerged. If you know what I mean...... ; P

P116 : 1st Time Voting

The 12th general election is upon us & you see signs of it everywhere. Posters, banners and flags adorned every tree, bridge & road. You see lots of deep blue ones, some light blue & some green. Government propaganda started appearing in the media. Ceramahs being held everywhere.

I remember collecting those tiny flags when I was small. But this time around, I will be voting for the first time. Yay!!

I will be voting here, in P116-Wangsa Maju where incumbent YB Yew Teong Lok from MCA will faced off with lawyer Wee Choo Keong (of Lingam tape fame) from PKR. I am still undecided on who to vote for. Still sitting on the fence but excited nevertheless ; )

Traditionally, this is a BN stronghold & signs are definitely pointing to another term for them. Section 2 is filled with thousands of posters of BN, Pak Lah & Yew. PKR's presence can hardly be felt, drowned by the might of BN's machinery. Are they giving up already?

Their choice of Wee Choo Keong is a surprise indeed, considering he was supposed to contest in Bukit Bintang before the last minute change of mind. Parachuting so late into Wangsa Maju might not work so well in his favour. Even though a swing in Chinese votes is likely, news of Wangsa Maju getting a new Chinese school will certainly tipped the dacing into BN's side.

I managed to watched DSAI's ceramah in Wangsa Maju last Thursday here. It's very funny, witty and inspiring. He touch on various issues, even said that the opposition will lower oil prices once it came into power. Some people find that statement laughable, considering the soaring prices in the market (my dad included). But of course, that guy is smart & had a plan. He is an ex-Finance Minister after all so he definitely knew what he is talking about.

BN's slogan for this election is 'Selamat, Aman, Makmur'.They still have the nerve to use that as a slogan even when crime rates are on the rise? Now tell me, which one is more laughable?

When Newspaper Lies

November 10, a historic day for Malaysia, yet many of us were not able have a clear picture of the events due to the distortion by the mainstream media.

Last Saturday, a rally calling for electoral reforms were organized by BERSIH with more than 10 000 people took to the streets to join the peaceful march. Yes, more than 10 000 people!! Nope, not 4000 as reported by The Star.

One,two,three,um...4000? Really?

The march of the monks in Myanmar created major headlines in our local newspapers but strangely a rally of this magnitude can’t even make the front page of our local daily ( not even the 2nd or 3rd page for that matter )

It’s at page 8 of The Star with no pictures. The television news were no better with the local channels reporting about the success of the police in foiling the rally.

This couldn’t be further from the truth, as the rally successfully hands over the memorandum to the Agong with minimal disturbance.

Is this sponsored by Digi?

Luckily, we can rely on the foreign media to give a truthful account of the event with al Jazeera having a correspondent in Masjid Jamek ,right when they were spraying chemicals on the protesters. The poor journalist was one of the victims as cameras captured FRU spraying water and throwing tear gas to break up the crowd.

Our Info Minister was so furious with the channel, he made a mockery of himself on live TV.

But I must admit though, what he said does have a point, that Malaysia is a democratic country, unlike Myanmar or Pakistan. Because you see, when the monks march in Myanmar, the military junta let the peaceful protest go on for weeks before a crackdown.

But in so called democratic Malaysia, the police set up roadblocks leading to the city to prevent people from gathering. When they managed to evade those, they used water cannons and tear gasses to disperse the crowds before they can even start marching.

Hmm…go figure
